I use the ati proprietary driver on my laptop now, and have decent performance with it. I believe the general consensus is on all the lists I subscribe to is that nvidia is generally more advanced at this point, but ati is slowly coming around. How is it that Linux was able to operate during the install in a graphics mode, and why couldn't it continue to operate in that generic mode instead of forcing me to use the Nvidia drivers? I've had no luck with it on my current geforce 440go card in my laptop, but others with exactly the same laptop give good results (guess it's a case of dedication to the cause and trying I think that if you're running Linux (I am), the OS and Nvidia drivers will actually treat GeForce and Quadro cards the same.
